EU Commissioner Emphasizes: Europe must focus on cutting-edge chip manufacturing and lead the development of chip manufacturing

On May 19, Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market of the European Union, emphasized in his keynote speech: "Europe must manufacture its own cutting-edge chips and lead the development of the chip manufacturing industry, otherwise it will face the risk of falling behind. important, but not enough to make the EU a leader in the chip industry."

He said Europe must fight off any attempt to divide itself geographically, which means Europe can only make chips with mature technology, while Asia and the United States will make cutting-edge chips.

He added, "Europe cannot and will not be seen as a bystander when it comes to chip manufacturing, and we want Europe to know how to lead in chips."

Breton stressed the importance of European research and technology to the advanced chips being made today, but acknowledged that "brilliant research" alone is not enough.

"To be influential in the chip space, you need to build factories and produce in Europe," Breton said, noting that industry players such as Intel, Infineon, STMicroelectronics and GlobalFoundries have become more expensive due to the EU's recent approval of the Chip Act. New projects are planned in Europe.

"With the passage of the EU Chips Act, we're sending a strong signal to everyone that Europe is open when it comes to chips," he said.

In April, the European Council and the European Parliament reached an agreement to invest $3.6 billion in EU funds to build chip manufacturing capacity on the continent, with the aim of attracting a further $43.7 billion in private investment.
