Infineon's CoolSiC™ XHP™2 high-power modules help drive decarbonization of energy-efficient electrified trains
Infineon Technologies addresses these needs by adding two new products to its CoolSiC™ power module portfolio: FF2000UXTR33T2M1 and FF2600UXTR33T2M1. The power modules feature newly developed 3.3kV CoolSiC™ MOSFETs and Infineon's .XT interconnect technology, packaged in XHP™ 2, and are specifically tailored for traction applications.
In addition to the need for highly efficient and reliable silicon carbide (SiC) chips, power modules for traction drives also require packaging suitable for high-speed switching and interconnection technologies that extend device life. Infineon's new power modules feature the following features: CoolSiC™ MOSFET chips with integrated body diodes in Infineon's XHP 2 package enable low switching losses while maintaining high reliability and power density.
The XHP 2 package also features low stray inductance, a symmetrical and scalable design, and high current. The drain-source on-resistance of the FF2000UXTR33T2M1 module is 2.xn--0m-fcc, while the drain-source on-resistance of the FF2600UXTR33T2M1 module is 2.xn--6m-fcc. Despite the stringent operational requirements of train operations, Infineon's .XT interconnect technology improves power cycling capabilities.
Infineon's CoolSiC™ power modules reduce the total energy consumption of train motors and frequency converters by 10% compared to conventional solutions. Train drivers will also benefit from more compact and lightweight drives and simplified cooling systems. The new products not only help Infineon Technologies, traction manufacturers and railway service operators to achieve low-carbonization, but also reduce operating noise when the train is running, benefiting residents around the route. In 2022, Infineon's SiC-based XHP 2 power modules have been demonstrated in a joint field test project for trams between Siemens Mobility and the Munich municipal utility (SWM). Tests have shown that SiC-based power semiconductors significantly reduce engine running noise.
