Intel Releases New Silicon Spin Qubit Chip
According to information received by Lansheng Technology: a few days ago, Intel released Tunnel Falls, a new quantum chip containing 12 silicon spin qubits. The chip is the most advanced silicon spin qubit chip Intel has ever developed, using Intel's decades of accumulated transistor design and manufacturing capabilities.
The quantum chip is produced on 300mm silicon wafers in Intel's fab, drawing on Intel's leading transistor industrial manufacturing capabilities, such as extreme ultraviolet lithography and gate and contact layer processing technology. In silicon spin qubits, the spin state (up/down) of a single electron corresponds to the information encoding (0/1). A silicon spin qubit is essentially a single-electron transistor, so Intel was able to manufacture it using a process similar to standard CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) logic production lines.
Intel believes that silicon spin qubits have an advantage over other qubit technologies because they can be produced using similar production techniques as advanced transistors. Silicon spin qubits are about the size of a transistor, about 50 by 50 nanometers, one millionth the size of other types of qubits, and are expected to be mass-produced sooner. A paper in the journal Nature Electronics suggests that silicon may be the medium with the best chance of realizing large-scale quantum computing.
Next, Intel will continue to improve the performance of Tunnel Falls and integrate it with the Intel Quantum Software Development Kit into Intel's quantum computing stack. In addition, based on the experience of manufacturing Tunnel Falls, Intel has already begun to develop the next generation of quantum chips, which are expected to be launched in 2024.
