Japanese technology giants have made efforts to improve 2nm chip technology
At the end of 2021, Mitsubishi Electric and Toshiba jointly invested in a semiconductor manufacturing company called "Secco Japan". The company plans to develop a 2nm chip process and start production in the next few years.
According to reports, the company will adopt a new transistor structure called "gate transistor" to achieve the 2nm level process technology.
In addition, other Japanese semiconductor manufacturers such as Fujitsu, Sony and NEC are also conducting research and development on 2nm chip manufacturing processes.
At the end of 2022, Japan's Toyota, Sony, Renesas and other eight industry giants jointly established Rapidus. The Japanese government has given huge subsidies, hoping to build advanced semiconductor production lines, from the current 45nm process to the 2nm process.
The latest news is that Rapidus has officially announced its future construction plan. It will establish a fab in Hokkaido, Japan, start construction in September 2023, complete the plant infrastructure in June 2024, and start clean room construction.
Start operating a pilot production line in April 2025, and introduce EUV lithography machines and other equipment. The goal is to start mass production of the 2nm process in 2027-this progress is only 1 later than the mass production of 2nm node processes by TSMC, Samsung and Intel. -2 years.
It is worth mentioning that Rapidus not only wants to mass produce 2nm technology, but also plans to achieve an annual revenue of 1 trillion yen in the 2030s, which is about 7.2 billion U.S. dollars.
In the 1980s, Japan's semiconductor industry once became the world's number one and put great pressure on American manufacturers. However, it lost its leading edge after being suppressed by the United States. The 2nm effort is its latest attempt to return to the top.
However, as of May 2023, there has been no substantial progress in Japan's 2nm plan, which is all a prospect for the future.
