STMicroelectronics Introduces VL53L7CX Multi-Region ToF Ranging Sensor with Camera-like Field of View

【Lansheng Technology Information】STMicroelectronics recently announced the launch of a multi-area ranging sensor with a 90° diagonal field of view (diagonal FoV) based on FlightSense™ time-of-flight (ToF): VL53L7CX. The 90° diagonal field of view is the industry's best performance, which is 33% larger than the previous generation sensor VL53L5CX. Such sensors enable life-like situational awareness for applications such as home automation, home appliances, computers, robotics, and smart devices used in stores, factories, and more.

Unlike camera CMOS image sensors with similar functions, the new ToF ranging sensor VL53L7CX does not capture images, fully protecting user privacy. The VL53L7CX expands the diagonal field of view to an unprecedented 90°, enhances peripheral sensing capabilities, and almost equals the field of view of a camera. This enhances the performance of presence detection and system activation, such as activating a screen or waking up devices such as ovens or coffee makers.

The VL53L7CX also enhances the performance of applications such as smart waste management for tracking full and empty containers. Improvements have also been achieved in the robot's ground sensing, cliff prediction, obstacle avoidance, and small object detection. Other applications include keystone correction in projectors and hand tracking applications using the STGesture™ software package for extended gesture recognition.
