STMicroelectronics STM32 USB PD MCU now supports UCSI specification, accelerating the widespread adoption of Type-C power supply
【Lansheng Technology Information】July 24, 2023, China - STM32Cube, STMicroelectronics' STM32 microcontroller (MCU) software ecosystem, has added a USB Type-C® Connector System Interface (UCSI) software library to speed up USB - Development of Power Delivery (PD) applications.
X-CUBE-UCSI is a UCSI-certified turnkey solution that includes ready-to-use hardware and firmware examples using STM32 MCUs as UCSI PD controllers for standardized communications. Customers can directly copy-paste these reference designs and benefit from optimized Bill of Materials (BoM) costs.
The software from STMicroelectronics allows the MCU to interface with the system's main processor, exchange information with the operating system using the UCSI protocol, and simultaneously control the USB-C connection and the PD protocol. The main processor can be a system-on-chip (SoC), application processor or STM32MP microprocessor, and the responsibility of the main processor is the UCSI operating system policy manager (OPM). The PD controller on the STM32 MCU acts as a UCSI Platform Policy Manager (PPM). Many of the STM32 MCUs offer the peripherals required for USB Type-C Power Delivery (UCPD). The STM32G0 series is a low-priced USB Type-C power supply microcontroller. It is an ideal low-pin-count companion chip for MPUs, and is specifically responsible for handling PD power supply functions.
The software also allows programming firmware on STM32 MCUs with the host processor during the production line and during the application life cycle. The main processor uses the UCSI driver provided by Microsoft or the Linux community and related commands to exchange data with the PD controller. In addition to saving development time, the software extends interoperability between USB-C devices, supporting the latest use cases offered by the technology.
