Vishay's new infrared sensor provides stable ranging in direct sunlight
Lansheng Technology Information: Recently, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced that it has launched two new fixed-gain infrared (IR) sensors: surface mount TSSP93038DF1PZA and leaded TSSP93038SS1ZA, which reduce system cost and improve the stability of outdoor sensor applications. Both products are housed in a small Minimold package with a typical irradiance of 1.3 mW/m² for stable operation in direct sunlight while being sensitive enough to support optical grating applications.
Vishay's new infrared sensor has a controllable sensitivity to work in direct sunlight without unwanted pulses. Additionally, for short-range reflective and proximity/ranging applications, sensor desensitization does not require very low transmitter forward current, which can cause erratic intensity output.
The new infrared sensor has a fast response time of 260 μs and a long proximity detection distance (1 meter at 100 mA with the TSAL6100). Under the same setting, the detection distance of the light curtain application can reach 11 meters. Use VSLY5940 and other emitters with more concentrated light, or increase the forward current of the emitter to extend the detection distance.
Ideal for detecting distance to objects, this infrared sensor can be used in toys, RC aircraft, robots, proximity switches; traffic signals and parking lot presence detection, access control and water level sensors; and robotic light barriers for sports games and lawnmowers. It can also be used as a reflective sensor for hand dryers, tissue or soap dispensers, automatic faucets, toilets, vending machine fall detection, and security and pet gates.
Vishay's new infrared sensor operates from 2.0 V to 3.6 V, supplies only 0.35 mA, and is sensitive to a 38 kHz carrier frequency. The device accepts infrared pulses from transmitters with a peak wavelength of 940 nm, is insensitive to supply voltage ripple noise, shields against EMI, and has an infrared filter that suppresses visible light. The sensor is RoHS and Vishay Green Compliant and Halogen Free.
